You know that old adage about how great things come in small packages? Well, if you’ve never seen the incredibly stunning images captured with photomicrography (bet you can’t say that three times fast), the winners of Nikon’s 36th Annual Small World competition are going to redefine that for you. The technique, which uses microscopes to capture the typically unseen beauty of commonplace objects such as soy sauce, sodium and seaweed, is one employed by many scientists and researchers, but there’s no denying that the images produced possess an otherworldly beauty. While the order of the 20 Nikon-selected winners won’t be announced until Oct. 13th, fans are invited to rate the top entries on Nikon’s Small World website to determine the “Popular Choice” winner. So, what’s it gonna be? The soap scum or the fly eyes?(All images courtesy Nikon)
