"This World Exists in Everyone's City" — Molly Harris Gets Close to Adelaide's Sex Workers

Three women, dependent heroin users since the 1980s, let Molly and her camera into their lives for three months.

"I think most people are willing to share their story with you if you ask." Molly Harris must be an especially good listener, because people tend to tell her stories they'd usually keep to themselves. Her latest series,  Closer to Heaven, is a lingering look into the lives of three older sex workers in her community, all dependent heroin users. They allowed Molly's camera to capture everything, from showers to sex.

For three months, Molly spent every Thursday with them. She'd drive them to score in her car, they'd see clients, they'd get high. All have been using heroin since the 80s, and all have made repeated efforts to get clean over the years.

"I think this world exists in everyone's city," Molly explains. "And people should see and understand how other people live. Not everyone's been born with circumstance and ambition and upbringing on our side."

Molly Harris is an award winning Australian documentary photographer. She has a strong interest in community, culture and marginalisation.
