Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada supports President Donald Trump's "limited and focused action" in Syria after the US fired more than 50 missiles into the country in retaliation for this week's chemical weapons attack.

That attack, launched by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, left at least 80 dead, including 30 children.

Trudeau denounced Syria's use of chemical weapons saying "these gruesome attacks cannot be permitted to continue operating with impunity."

The US fired between 50 and 60 missiles from two Mediterranean-based warships Thursday night at a government-controlled airfield near Homs. The Syrian army claims the American attack left six dead.

Both Russia and Iran denounced the US strikes.

Canada had no involvement in the US attack, according to National Defence.
