The Government Thinks Legalizing Weed on Canada Day Might Be a Bad Idea

So much for Cannabis Day.

The Canadian government recently announced that the new legal weed regime would commence on July 1, 2018—Canada Day.

But it seems they spoke too soon.

"I don't think that's an appropriate date," Liberal MP Bill Blair, who is in charge of the government's pot file, told CBC. "I don't believe July 1 should be an implementation date for anything; it is a day of celebration for the anniversary and founding of our country."

The date will now likely be "on or before July 1."

The government will table its plan to regulate and tax cannabis on Thursday. The new laws are expected to legalize personal possession and production.

While we don't yet know what the new launch date will be, April 20 seems like a pretty solid candidate.
