Madrid's Dog Poop Problem Inspires LED Art Intervention

Spanish design studio Luzinterruptus’s pop-up public artworks have been shedding LED light on environmental and social issues for years now. Their pieces have ranged from consumerist Christmas trees to gardens of shining syringes, and now the studio is tackling a public health problem that really stinks: Madrid’s failing sanitation system. In You’d Better Watch Your Step In Madrid, Luzinterruptus turns their art activism towards the overabundance of dog doo littering the city’s streets.

With the help of a few generous pairs of lungs, the studio inflated 500 poop-scoopin' plastic bags and placed a lightbulb inside each one. For the next nine hours, until the city sanitary service whisked the installation away with the morning trash, the glowing trash bags littered the streets of Madrid, to the delight of pedestrians and puppies alike.
