Initially launched as part of the Lumiere Festival in Durham, England, Spanish art collective Luzinterruptus' Consumerist Christmas Tree is made entirely form repurposed plastic bags. Luzinterruptus hopes to "challenge our addiction to plastic bags and consider the environmental consequences of our throw-away society at a time of the year when our consumption hits an annual high." The piece also coincided with a garbage collectors strike in Madrid, and was meant to be an act of solidarity with the workers.

Though masterminded by Luzinterruptus, the project also required extra hands (and trash), which was amply provided by local residents of Stoke-on-Trent, where the second incarnation of the tree was staged last year. Up to 4,000 units of plastic bags were donated to the project, and then exchanged for cloth replacements.Below, check out this imaginative trash Christmas display in all its glory:
