Five Football Players Arrested In Latest Mess For Rutgers Athletics

Things are far from OK in New Brunswick

Things are far from OK within the Rutgers athletic department.

The trouble began with the gradual unmasking of athletic director Julie Hermann as grossly incompetent and/or downright tyrannical dating back to her days at Tennessee. It continued when the school announced an investigation into whether head football coach Kyle Flood tried to influence a professor into keeping one of his players, cornerback Nadir Barnwell, academically eligible.

Today brings the most disturbing news of all. Five current Rutgers football players were arrested on charges ranging from aggravated assault to robbery as part of an investigation that saw 10 people charged with various crimes. Four of the players, including Barnwell, were charged with aggravated assault, riot and conspiracy to commit riot after an incident in which they and two other defendants surrounded and beat "at least four other individuals." The fifth player, defensive back Andre Boggs, was charged with robbery, burglary while armed, and conspiracy to commit an armed robbery after playing a part in at least two home invasions. And if all that wasn't bad enough, two of the other men charged were former Rutgers football players listed on the Scarlet Knights' roster as recently as 2014.

Unsurprisingly, all five current players are now suspended pending further developments. Whether any of those developments resolve the larger problems at Rutgers remains to be seen.
