6Blocc's "Basstruck EP" Gives Footwork Some West Coast Swag

...And more on the L.A Bass journeyman's ride from jungle to dubstep to footwork

Raoul Gonzalez has been a central figure in the history of bass music in Los Angeles. His R.A.W moniker, an acronym for Rules All Warehouses, has been tearing up the jungle scene since the 90s, but a fascination with slower, sub-centric beats fostered an additional moniker, 6Blocc, in the mid 2000s. Over the past couple of years, he's been on that footwork tip and his freshly released Basstruck EP on L.A's SMOG is an undoubtable treatise on the genre.

"Footwork is like musical geometry," he tells THUMP, "where percussion, drums, vocal edits and sub bass work their magic." In particular, 6Blocc's been occupying the fertile meeting ground between jungle and footwork, where acts like Om Unit, DJ Earl and Calculon have found much success. In his words: "Jungle and footwork share similarities in that they both sit between 160-170 bpms and can be mixed together and create an intense energy…Basstruck EP is my electronic fusion project where I mash up footwork, jungle, hip hop, trap and added some samples from some of my favorite MC's."

And his thoughts on the scene in his native L.A? "We are spoiled! Since 1990, we have had some of the best shows I've ever been to. Today it's just out of control. What ever kind of music you're into is going off every weekend somewhere in L.A."
