8 Must-See Animations From Around The Web

In this list of animated videos you won’t find anything from Kanye West, Jonas & Francois or the six-time award-winning animation for “Take On Me” from Norwegian pop band A-ha. Instead, we grazed the underbelly of the internet to bring you the best overlooked animations, most of which have never even been seen on TV. Though the songs may be from some relatively unknown artists, these animations are true mini works of art. Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments below…

The Wave Pictures: “Sweetheart”

Videos by VICE

You know those amateur YouTube collages made from sourced images that literally visualize what the lyrics are saying? In this clip director Ben Reed did exactly that, but in a completely picturesque way. The time he must have spent researching, along with the first-class video editing, prove that technique can trump any potential “cheesiness.”

Los Massieras: “Boogity Boogity Boogity”

Director Gerson Aguerri creates a surreal universe by mixing space-like elements and fireworks with famous Earthly monuments like the Egyptian pyramids and Mount Rushmore. Hairy, hobbit-like creatures inhabit this place, before they’re exterminated by walking skulls with bat wings. Storylines like this make us wonder what directors like Aguerri eat for breakfast.

standing EGG: “lalala”

Ok, you ready for this one? A cracked egg yolk turns into a kitten that walks through forests of broccoli, peppers, strawberries and other vegetables on the hunt for other yolky friends. You know, pretty standard stuff. The backdrop is composed from cutesy fabric patterns and was made by Japanese director Taijin Takeuchi, famous for the stop-motion animation A Wolf Loves Pork.

Brandt Brauer Frick: “Caffeine”

This animation illustrates the depressing modern conundrum of waking up, having breakfast, going to work, drooling over your computer, getting home from work and doing it all over again the next day. Danae Diaz and Patricia Luna depict caffeine as the drug that turns men into robots… though we tend to hold caffeine in a much more positive light. Everything and everyone is annoyingly uniform until one person decides to be different.

All India Radio: “Lucky”

Australian producer Oh Yeah Wow directed this meticulous animation by light painting with glow sticks for every single frame. We’ve seen this technique used a ton before, but this deserves a little extra love because it also was a finalist at the YouTube Play/Guggenheim Museum Biennial in 2010.

Danger Beach: “Apache”

Native American characters in this animation by Ned Wenlock walk through a naturalistic scenario that rotates around itself resembling one of those lampshades that project little fish or stars around the room.

Punks Jump Up: “Blockhead”

This one is cool because it’s more like a stage projection than a video clip. Mustashrik and Partizan go insane mixing kaleidoscopes, sentences, half-naked women, and African masks—all in black and white.

Massive Attack: “United Snakes”

This one isn’t new and we’ve mentioned it before, but this clip directed by Creators United Visual Artists (UVA) is just too professional to be left off this list.
