OK Go's GPS iPhone Art Project

OK Go are using their iPhones to draw all over the streets—and they’re inviting fans to do it, too.

Viral music video mavens OK Go never seem to be gone long before coming back into our collective conscious with a new digital art project. Last we heard from the band, they were drawing on toast and filming it with their phones. This time, the group comes equipped with a full parade. The iPhone is their paint brush, and the streets are their canvas. An iPhone app that tracks GPS in real time lets the band and their motley parade of brightly dressed merrymakers draw their path through the streets of Los Angeles. The eight-mile long musical trek drew the name of the band in a clever example of GPS virtual graffiti.

January’s parade was just the inaugural event for what the band hopes will be a much larger project. Fans are invited to download the free app and contribute to the crowdsourced GPS drawings themselves. OK Go plans to collect the footage and drawings from all the contributors and compile them into a single music video that showcases the collaborative efforts of all those involved. We can’t help but to be excited about how far this project could be taken, and the scale of the drawings to come.
