When Graphics Are Louder Than The Music

VJ PARPUNK makes visuals so vivid, they feel loud.

When you watch VJ PARPUNK’s visual work for famous Korean rock band, YB (formerly known as Yoon Do Hyun Band) it feels like you’ve accidentally fallen into a chromatic rave—a sudden sonic boom of blinding neon lights and rampant patterns takes over your field of vision. PARPUNK’s visuals, which can be quite dizzying at times, echo the band's head-banging reverberations so vigorously you don't even need the volume on to rock-and-roll.

VJ PARPUNK is graphic designer and entertainment architect, Park Hun-Kyu. Let’s just say this Seoul-based creative has come a long way since his first gig as a newspaper delivery boy, taking a stab at all kinds of mediums for artistic expression. He's published two books as a travel writer, Underground Travel and Overground Travel, the latter being born from a UK voyage where Hun-Kyu was inspired by the (now) excessively celebrated graffiti artist, Banksy. As a producer, his first album Park Hun Kyu's Overground Travel OST features big names like DJ Soulscape, DJ Primary, and one of the few famous Korean punk bands, No Brain. From the illustrations for his books, to the music production and artwork direction for his album, Park is a hands-on creative who plays all primary roles, fully circumscribing his aesthetic intentions.

In his role as VJ, Park has created concert visuals for an impressive variety of Korean artists like heartthrob singer/actor, Rain; K-Pop star G-Dragon’s first solo concert, SHINE A LIGHT in late 2009; and a number of concerts for hip-hop's former finest, now on hiatus, Epik High.

As the director of his own PARPUNK STUDIO and PARPUNK indie music label, Park continues his free flowing endeavors, trying his hand at pretty much everything, giving rhyme to reason for his reputation as a well-spread and practiced prodigy. Check out some of his collaborations with DJ Primary and Joon Sung Lee.
