The Australian Album Chart Will Use Streaming Data For The First Time

The ARIA album chart is changing to reflect how Australians are consuming music.

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) will now include on demand audio streams as well as physical sales and digital downloads to calculate the weekly album chart.

Following the US, UK and New Zealand, who already calculate streams in their charts, as of May 15, ARIA will collect data from streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and Google Play to determine the number one album.

"With streaming now the primary method of music consumption in Australia, ARIA can ensure that the ARIA albums chart will continue to be the most accurate indication of the nation's favourite music each and every week," said ARIA chief executive Dan Rosen.

ARIA will use methodology from the UK's Official Chart Company, to reflect the difference in value between streaming and physical and downloaded albums.

But all the calculators and methodology won't stop the fact that Ed Sheeran will most likely sit atop the charts for the next two years.
