Melbourne Cabaret Restaurant Dracula's is Closing Due to "Gentrification"

The #iconic venue's 37 years in the business are over.

One of those things that's so uncool it's cool again, Dracula's has been a well-loved Melbourne attraction for 37 years. But earlier this week they announced they would be closing their doors permanently this December.

"We are seeing the demand for our style of live entertainment in the region we offer has diminished in recent years despite our earnest efforts to maintain our popularity," they wrote on their Facebook page.

If you live in Melbourne and you haven't been to Dracula's, you will have at least walked or driven past and seen the punters snaked around the building at twilight, readying themselves for the renowned experience of dinner and a show. But what even is it? If the rumours are to be believed, a bizarre, and genuinely enchanting medieval-style sit-down dinner, with some kind of spooky or fantastical interactive cabaret play that happens around you while you dine.

Speaking to The Age, operations manager Luke Newman said the closure was due to a number of contributing factors, including general gentrification, RMIT's procurement of the surrounding area, and Melbourne's new underground metro tunnel project having a station constructed basically "next door".

Dracula's thanked their many customers and fans, and said that their final performance would be on December 23rd of this year. Their Gold Coast venue will remain open.
