Energy companies in Virginia need somewhere to process all the coal they’ve gleaned from beheading mountains, so Dominion Resources is proposing a 585-megawatt power plant in Wise County. Grassroots group Citizens of Southwest Virginia is attempting to put the kibosh on the project with a mile-long, 50,000-signature petition they will deliver to Dominion and the governor on Thursday. Besides pointing out the flaws of building what basically amounts to a giant pollution factory, CSW is also appealing for more state and local resources for sustainable-energy alternatives. Looks like they’re going to be short of their goal, which is super depressing when you consider they couldn’t scrounge up 12,000-odd people who think 3 AM dynamite wake-up calls and slurry-flavored water are bad vibes. Our favorite (and perhaps the most salient) complaint is how Kathy Selvage’s mom is unable to concentrate on her morning Bible reading because of the racket. You don’t have to be a resident of Virginia to sign the thing, so take a minute and help these guys out.
