Punks Rejoice: Green Day's 'American Idiot' May Be Coming to HBO

The pop-punk musical refuses to stay dead.

American Idiot, Green Day's ham-handed rock opera about… being a punk during the George W. Bush administration? Or something? has been around longer than anyone thought thanks to its second life as a Broadway play, then a making-of documentary called Broadway Idiot. It's survived the mockery of Ted Leo and a development purgatory after Tom Hanks's company bought the film rights, and is now apparently heading to HBO to be resurrected yet again.

Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong told NME Thursday that the project has been green-lit by HBO and is currently in pre-production, with Armstrong set to reprise his role as St. Jimmy from the musical.

"The script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there," Armstrong said to NME, "so I'm not sure when exactly we're going to start shooting, but it's definitely all systems go at the moment."
