One of the unfortunate things about being in London over the last few years, is that when I think of tweenagers that "make beats", I can't help but imagine the army of mouthbreathers in south London making "grime instrumentals" at 140bpm and playing them on their phones at the bus-stop. WHY DOES NOBODY INVEST IN EARPHONES?!In reality, plenty of super young producers are actually making good, non-obnoxious music, including LA-based beat collective WeDidIt. The name hints at like, the most pretentious thing ever, but they do actually churn out some pretty good stuff, including lots of woozy trip-hop-come-hip-hop instrumentals with a buttload of synth. The best known members are probably producer Shlohmo, who is responsible for the best rework ever of R&B nymphomaniac, Jeremih, earlier this year with "Fuck You All The Time" and Groundislava. The latter remixes Shlohmo’s original lo-fi track into a slightly bassier offering, complete with weightless synths and tinkling piano. It's the kind of thing you listen to at the end of the night, when you’re aimlessly wandering the streets in tears, clutching an empty Wray bottle and trying to find yourself.
FYI.
