In case you haven't noticed, Trap is the next big "thing" in electronic dance music. Basically every producer with an 808 emulator is pumping out his or her dubsteppy "Knuck If You Buck" knockoff, and things are starting to sound like a lot like a Gucci Mane gangbang.Fortunately, a handful of producers continue to push the genre in new and innovative directions. Heading the pack that includes everyone from Flosstradamus to Baauer to Araabmuzik, ATL mainstays Heroes x Villains, the duo comprised of Daniel Disaster and Pete Heartless, just released their first original track (in almost a decade of defining the genre). We spoke to Daniel Disaster about the new tune, the state of trap, and everything in between.Noisey: How have you seen trap evolve over the past decade?
Heroes x Villains: We've watched this music go from the hood to all over the world, man. It's dominated urban radio play starting with TIP, Jeezy, and Gucci, and now the mixtape culture of how trap music is released is crossing over into the world of EDM. Shits crazy and really exciting. You're seeing producers like Araabmuzik performing at Coachella these days.Seems like it's hit the mainstream. Are you happy with the success it's had as of late?
Yeah. Maybe now ill start getting booked at shit other than strip clubs.Haha, who else do you find is pushing the envelope?
As far as, like, EDM-inspired trap goes, TNGHT, Flosstradamus, Baauer, ETC ETC, Mayhem, Damage, VAVLT BOYZ, and Swizzy in Philly are doing some crazy shit…I don't even know what it is, but its dope. Click and Whistles, Kastle, Shlomo, Salva, RL Grime…All those dudes, man. They're really doing some interesting music that I really fuck with. As far as the trap producers I'm really fucking with right now, man, no one is fucking with Spinz and Mike Will this year. They own the year, hands down. Mike Will is on a run right now, ain't nobody fucking with him. He's got, like, 70% of the biggest records out.Major. Whats next for you?
Right now, this RUN THE TRAP EP we're putting out on Livemixtapes at the end of August, along with a documentary about the rise of trap music's influence in dance music. I did some shit that's coming out on Dim Mak soon, got some more collaborations coming up, and some more VAVLT BOYZ shit on that #luxurytrap movement. Got some new threads coming out with Black Scale soon and we're doing a pop up shop in Paris in December with an all trap music party.Bon Voyage!Bonus: Here's the Cold Summer mixture by VAVLT BOYZ resident, RESPIRE, to get you through a hot day.@emersonyeah
