USA Out Of Vietnam Give Us Their 8tracks

The progressive rock band from Montreal breaks down which eight songs are helping them get inspired.

USA Out Of Vietnam is a four-piece Montreal band that doesn't fit neatly into any one specific genre. They combine elements of psych pop, prog rock, and drone pop so effortlessly that the resulting music is equal parts brilliant and confounding. They broke down their eight favourite songs of the moment in this week's 8tracks playlist:

The War on Drugs - Under The Pressure:
This song has great drive - it hits those emotional pressure points in all the right places. Sounds like what you'd get if Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler went on a road trip with Talk Talk and just surrendered to the feeling of the road rolling under their feet.

Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams:
Creepy and comforting at the same time. By far the best video I've seen in a long time! Plus, amazing sax work from Collin Stetson!

Swans – She Loves Us:
Picking just one song off the new Swans opus “To Be Kind” is more than daunting as the two hour odyssey begs to be taken in as a hole - but fuggit here’s a nugget for you tire kickers out there. This is probably the most realized and gut wrenching listen that has come down the pipe in over five years and only galvanizes the fact they are one of the most important rock bands of all time. In short, head honcho Swan Michael Gira is a God that walks amongst us puny humans and deems most of the current indy dreck trivial at best. Surrender to their will!

Marie Davidson – Abduction:
We are all big fans of Montreal chanteuse Marie Davidson and were over the moon that she agreed to play with us at our record launch in Montreal last week. On Abduction her mixture of sequencer driven electronics, Georgio Moroder dense groove and detail, Giallo soundtrack creepiness and icy Nico delivery is a great place to dip yer digits in her frigid waters. Give into the hypnotic ballast, open up your mind’s eye and dive into the abyss.

Agnes Obel - Dorian:
Minimal instrumentation yet the harmonies make it sound full. There's a highly recommended stripped down live performance on YouTube featuring Agnes on the piano accompanied by a cellist and violinist. It's a tearjerker.

FKA Twigs - Ache:
FKA Twigs was love at first listen. It's ambient and ethereal, yet it borrows enough from multiple genres to keep it interesting. It's also kind of weird, which is definitely a good thing.

FKA Twigs – Papi Pacify:
I know one of my band mates already beat me to picking FKA Twigs but I’m going throw this song on the list anyways. When I first heard Papi Pacify I had that unsettling feeling of wishing I made that song…which I don't get very often. Perfectly minimal and glacial.

Jefre Cantu Ledesma - Floating Weeds:
Hard to pick a single track, so just listen to this whole album. It helps me think about uh, stuff.
