Premiere: Animalia Gets Guttural and Bright in the "Little Earth" Video

The Toronto artist lays out her voice on top of dark electronic drums.

It's hard to tear yourself away once you start listening to Animalia's "Little Earth" video. One part of you will be drawn in by the visuals as you struggle and squint to see if any details can possibly be made out on the lit up figure. Another part of you will be drawn to Animalia's siren song, performed through powerful windpipes that howl like the wind through a poorly insulated apartment.

"Animalia has always expressed a desire to avoid conventional pop-star gloss, so for her videos I’ve used simple practical effects to maintain a rougher aesthetic while trying to pair images with the more surreal and unsettling currents in her music," says Brandon Cronenberg, who directed the video. "I built the look around lighting experiments that to me suggest a character who exists out of phase with her environment."
