The Barbaras' "Day At The Shrine" Video Premiere

Goner just released the lost Barbaras album, recorded at home by Jay Reatard and then erased in an angry fit, or possibly lost in a hard drive mishap.

The Barbaras were a band made up of Billy Hayes, Stephen Pope (from Jay Reatard's band and later Wavves' band) and Alex Gates, who was in Magic Kids and is now in Wavves. All three of those guys were also in a band called Boston Chinks. What I'm saying is that these guys get around. There are probably some other guys in the band who also have with long musical careers.

Goner just released the lost Barbaras album. It was recorded at home by Jay Reatard, and then erased in an angry fit, or possibly or lost in a hard drive mishap where he supposedly lost a bunch of other recordings. The recordings for the album turned up on eight-track and they're pretty great.

"Day At The Shrine," the single that Goner is promoting the record with, sounds like a lot of Jay's songs. It's a certified banger, but not representative of the record, which is more than just a Reatard rip-off--It's all over the place in a lot of great ways. There's some fun party rock songs, some doo-wop sounding numbers, a cover of R. Stevie Moore's "Why Should I Love You?", and sleepy psychedelic tracks.

The poppy "Super Ball" has these sweetly affectionate lyrics that I dig thoroughly: "Pretty Girl, won't you take a shower with me? I want to watch you shave your legs, Baby please. And you can help me brush my teeth." Is that pervy to you? I thought it was very sweet, and part of day-to-day romance instead of some fantasy garbage.

Anyway Goner asked us to premiere the Barbaras video for "Day At the Shrine." That's that thing above.

The Barbaras record, 2006 - 2008, came out through Goner on October 30th. You can snag a copy right here.
