This Modern Love: BJ the Chicago Kid

Welp, turns out BJ the Chicago Kid is kinda into feet.

BJ the Chicago Kid is one of those dudes whose honeyed voice has passed through your ears, perhaps without realizing it. The Chicago native has is the go-to hook man in the hip-hop underground—he's done tracks with Kendrick Lamar, Warren G, Freddie Gibbs, Chance the Rapper, Rapsody… the list goes on. It's his association with Kendrick and the rest of the Los Angeles Black Hippy crew that has proven most fruitful for BJ, however, as his unforgettable hook on Schoolboy Q's "Studio" earned the him consistent radio spins and a well-deserved Grammy nomination.

Don't get it twisted, though: BJ the Chicago Kid is no one's sideman. His recent The M.A.F.E. project showcases BJ's ability to do a little bit of everything. Over the span of 12 tracks, he covers Aaliyah, hits the strip club with Freddie Gibbs, duets with Sasha Go Hard, spins Kanye's "Hold My Liquor" off into even harder-edged territory, and makes true-school soul that stands tall with the likes of Charles Bradley and Lee Fields. On "It's True," he reunites with his "Studio" cohort Schoolboy Q to offer tales of hardship and death. It's a chilling track, bolstered by its bizarre, austere video, in which BJ and Q rap in front of a chicken spot.

BJ was nice enough to fill out an online dating profile for our This Modern Love column. I left his answers as I received them; you get a sense of BJ's personality through the flow that they give his answers.
