In a special link-up from The Vatican to the International Space Station, Pope Benedict XVI asks how science can help bring peace on Earth and good will toward men. Mark Kelly’s reply is smart and politic: let’s use the kind of solar panels we have on the space station to end humanity’s fight over energy. No word however about, say, improving basic scientific literacy against the constant threat of religious insanity. Not that the Vatican has anything against science. It claims to have the oldest scientific institute in the world, has refuted Intelligent Design, crowed about melting glaciers, and apologized for declaring Galileo a heretic that one time. And yes, the Pope would even baptize an alien.
