Watch This Trailer: Quentin Dupieux's "Wrong" Teases Absurdist Mayhem

Remember that movie about the sentient tire that killed people with telekinesis? It was called Rubber. No? Well, Quentin Dupieux, the director of that absurdist gem is back with Wrong, a movie about. . . a detective I think. . . and a lost dog. . . featuring a bunch of quirky weirdo supporting characters and an electro soundtrack (also by Dupieux under his Mr. Oizo moniker). Anyway, I’ve found that trying to explain the work of Dupieux to people has always been a losing battle no matter how high your friends are. It’s always easier to just tell them to watch the trailer. So please, by all means. . .

Admit it, you want to see this so bad. Can you believe it’s in the Sundance 2012 world competition? Believe it. Now go show this to all your friends with drugs. I’ll bet it gets as much repeat viewing as the trailer for Rubber did easily.

Not your thing? Maybe the recently released International trailer for Indonesian action film The Raid is more your cup of blood-filled tea. This flick was stirring up all kinds of buzz at the Toronto Film Festival this year and this absolutely mental trailer shows exactly why :

Check out that beat editing! Damn it. Have you seen a more perfect trailer this year? I sincerely doubt it. Also of note: the awesome music playing in the background is that of the original composers Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemal, not that of Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda who has been brought on by Sony (the American distributors) to re-score the film. Yikes.

For the record, here is Sony’s trailer featuring Shinoda’s score:

Wow. Shocking. It sucks and sounds like Linkin Park. Great move Sony.

Seriously, enough. There should be little to no American hands on this thing beyond those of the distributors. God bless us, but we ruin a lot of shit. Remember when Harvey Weinstein recut Shaolin Soccer? Bad move. Remember when they announced the live action Akira was going to be American made and take place in futuristic Manhattan and that Kaneda would be a bar owner? Man, I think I heard Katsuhiro Otomo screaming something panicked in Japanese like that monk who falls off the bridge in the original.

Let’s be honest. I don’t even know why we bother making action movies when movies like The Raid are out there. I’ll take a Gareth Evans over a Michael Bay any day of the week. Hell, I’d take a Gareth Evans over a John Frankenheimer any day of the week. Real talk.

Finally, lets round things out with the trailer for Oren Moverman’s Rampart, which touts the incredibly strange tagline “the most corrupt cop you’ve ever seen on screen.”

OK, seriously, which one of you marketing geniuses thought this shit up? Probably the same one that signed off on this nü-metal ass trailer. Take a good long look folks, this is what these guys think you need to see to be lured into a theater. Sigh. Two out of three ain’t bad.

Down tuned guitars and butchered dialogue aside, those of us who saw Oren Moverman’s previous film The Messenger (also starring Woody Harrelson) know he’s a moody, intense guy who makes moody and intense movies of substance, not crooked cop porno for 13-year-old anarchists. I’d like to think that behind this truly awful trailer there is probably a mind-blowing and powerful film. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.
