Bed and Book is a kinda cute/kinda genius concept space that combines a bookstore and a boutique hostel. Designed by Japanese firm Suppose Design Office, the hybrid accommodation officially opened today and is located on the 7th floor of a building in Ikebukuro, one of Tokyo’s city centers. Providing overnight as well as daytime stays, Bed and Book allows visitors to escape the hustle and bustle outside by curling up with a book in their own cozy nook. Think of it as a capsule hotel with a home-y feel—and like a capsule hotel, affordability is key (stays start at $40AUD).

The idea for Bed and Book was inspired by the relaxing feeling of dozing off while absorbed in an interesting read. As the website explains, “The perfect setting for a good night’s sleep is something you will not find here. There are no comfortable mattresses, fluffy pillows nor lightweight and warm down duvets. What we do offer is an experience while reading a book.” In true Japanese design wizardry, the small space has been well-utilized; 30 beds are located behind the bookshelf and are fitted with personal reading lamps, with the largest of the two bed options being a bit bigger than a standard single.
What Bed and Book lacks in size, it makes up for in its selection of books on offer. The library has been curated by speciality bookstore Shibuya Publishing & Booksellers, who are known for their unusual and extensive selection of food, fashion, art, culture and lifestyle titles. While Bed and Book is aimed at international travellers, of the 1,700 books currently stocked there are both English and Japanese langauge options.
