We all know that special effects don’t make a great movie (just ask Michael Bay), but crafty use of animation, motion graphics, CGI and other tricks can help young filmmakers make a great-looking film without spend millions of dollars. And here’s the latest case in point, director Aaron Sims has made a brilliant sci-fi short Archetype on what he claims was $0 (with some personal investment, of course), an ambitiously well-crafted labor of love. The plot centers around a malfunctioning combat robot who suddenly starts recollecting human memories regarding a wife and daughter. When threatened with having his memory wiped clean, he gets a little testy.Sims is a concept designer who runs the eponymous Aaron Sims Company, which has worked on some projects you may have heard of including Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Green Lantern and Transformers—so he’s got a decent pedigree (and obviously a lot of connections in the industry). It’s incredibly impressive, with the visuals being on par with the multimillion dollar budgets of Hollywood, which just goes to show what getting a bunch of talented people contributing their time and skills for free can accomplish. He’s hoping the short will eventually be made into a feature, so go ahead and post this to Twitter and Facebook so that Sims can get his film deal.

Low Budget Sci-Fi Short Looks As Good As Any Mainstream Movie
Aaron Sims’ short film Archetype was made on hardly any money, but looks fantastic.
