Question Of The Day

Is it OK to Hate Posh People?

Do you mug yuppies or hug yuppies?

Photo via Tinker, tailor, soldier-activist in the fight against "posh-bashing" (and British actor) Benedict Cumberbatch has decided enough is enough. Why is he even being "posh-bashed" anyway, he wondered aloud to himself in an interview recently with the Radio Times? After all, he mused, in a rousing, braying soliloquy, it wasn't even as if he was "born into land or titles, or new money, or an oil rig".

He's even considering moving to the US for an extended holiday from British class prejudice, because as everyone knows, class doesn't exist in America – probably because the poor tend to die on the streets from lack of health insurance or something.

Is "posh-bashing" out of control? Is it OK to hate posh people? Tom, student (left) and Frederick, firefighter. VICE: Is it OK to hate posh people?
Frederick: Yeah, because I am one, I hate myself. I went to private school. I'm bloody posh.
Tom: Yeah, it's fine to hate posh people… [points at Frederick] People like him. I'm sensing some tension here.
Tom: Yeah, we just had a bust up, massive fight.
Frederick: You got battered by a posh person.
Tom: It was so degrading. Shemilla, works in a hotel: No, I don't have anything against posh people. This is really awkward. Max, promoter: I suppose it's OK to hate anyone, isn't it? I know plenty of nice posh people and I know plenty of not too nice posh people. You can't segregate. You judge each wanker on his own merits?
Yeah, it's just like anything in life isn't it? I just take people as they come. If a posh person knocked you over in the street, is it OK to hate that posh person?
Josh, manager of a club: Not really. Even if they knocked into you on purpose?
Yeah. What are you, Buddha?
It's the same if anyone knocks you over. I wouldn't hate someone just because they were posh. Calvin, graphic designer: I think it is, due to their sense of entitlement. Probably a bit of jealousy in there as well. So, posh people are deluded?
Yeah a bit, they've got a warped sense of reality. It's only natural give the way they're brought up. Pete, area manager: Definitely, they tend to be really snobby. I work in the service industry and they just tend to look at you like a piece of crap. They need a reality check. Bit of a kicking?
Yeah, defo. Chris, managing director: Absolutely. Apart from the posh people in the Olympics. They were quite good.
