Hey Europe! What You Wearing?

ZOE, 21

Vice: Hey there, Star Trek. What are you studying?

Zoe:

Fashion promotion, which incorporates the three things I want to do: styling, photography and graphic design.

That makes sense. So where do you pick up your rags?

Mainly in vintage shops as they're cheap. If I ever have money, which isn’t very often, Topshop or H&M.

What do you want to do after you’re done with this studying lark?

Hopefully something in fashion. Preferably styling. I’ve done a load of interning, so fingers crossed it should work.

BEN, 20

Vice: What are you pretending to study for three years?

Ben:

I was doing an art degree for two years in Sydney, and transferred to England to study politics. I was mystified with my decision. It still puzzles me to this day.

So what’s wrong with London, Crocodile Dundee?

It’s OK, it was more the course I hated.

OK, we’ll let you off. Where do you buy your clobber?

I buy most of my clothes from the internet because I’m lazy and shit. Which means I generally wear things that are either too big or too small for me.

CLEMENTINE, 22

Vice: What’s cooking, Frenchie?

Clementine:

I am a student of fine art at L’Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués de Paris.

Where do you tend to purchase your vêtements?

H&M, Bash, Maje. I am not so into trends or flash-in-the-pan fashion statements. I like my clothes to be timeless, classy and sober. That way they last longer.

You sound like a class act, Clementine. What tunes are currently rocking your fine art world?

I’m in a Billie Holiday phase, my favourite song these days is “Strange Fruit”.

MAXIME, 22

Vice: Sacre bleu! That is a serious ’tache. What are you up to?

Maxime:

Management and marketing at L’Institut D’Etudes Politiques in Grenoble.

Sounds serious. So where do you go shopping?

Mostly skate shops. I also take some from my friends. Getting clothes from friends is a lot cheaper and means you can take your time to work out if you really like them or not.

That sounds a bit like stealing. What do French students eat?

Weetabix and compote. It’s not a common, or very mixed diet, but it suits me well.

HANNAH, 20

Vice: Hey Hannah, so what kind of books are you burying yourself in?

Hannah:

International business.

I’d never have guessed. The world of finance is not going to know what’s hit it. Where do you buy your threads?

Most of my clothes I make myself. I’m not perfect at it, but I try to improve my skills. I would like to turn all my vague clothing ideas into beautiful dresses. The challenge is to make my technical shortcomings into advantages.

Sounds good. Maybe you should become a designer instead of a banker?

Maybe.

HELMUT, 21

Vice: Woah. You could be Alain de Botton’s stunt double if he ever became a major motion picture actor. What are you studying, egghead?

Helmut:

Slavic studies and dramatics.

Sounds good. The Johnny Cash vibe is really working for you. Where do you go to pick up all your black bits?

I don't really have a favourite shop. Whenever I see something I like and that I can afford, I buy it. I don’t give a shit about brands and trends. The most important thing for me is that I feel comfortable and that it looks good on me. But as you have noted I am partial to black.

JASPER, 21

Vice: Wow, you look a bit like the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang crossed with the giant from Twin Peaks. What are you studying, Giant Child Catcher?

Jasper:

Politics and philosophy.

Where do you buy your clothes?

I steal them off ex-girlfriends and buy them at Zara’s womenswear department. I like women’s clothes.

It shows. How’s your diet? You look like you could do with a good feeding.

I like to have “linner”, which is lunch and dinner combined. That’s the key to my dietry regime. I guess it’s probably not healthy but it works perfectly for me.

ANI, 22

Vice: You appear to have lost a syllable from your name. What is it you are doing at university, Ani?

Ani:

I'm studying social and cultural anthropology and my minor is in publicity and communication science.

Wowsers, sounds like serious subjects right there. Where can you find clothes fit for an anthropologist?

Well, I guess it's a mix of thrift store and old designer clothes of my mum’s and some shit H&M and American Apparel stuff in between.

Yep, sounds about right.

JUAN, 22

Vice: Hey Juan, what are you bookworming your way through in Madrid?

Juan:

Fashion and communication.

Do you communicate via your clothes?

I studied fashion so as to be able to make the clothes that I couldn't find in shops. This trenchcoat I’m wearing is mine, for example. So I guess in a way that I communicate my personality through my clothes.

Okay. What do you want to do once you are done at university?

Ideally set up my own clothing label and work for myself. I really like both designing clothes and the idea of being my own boss and not having anyone tell me what to do.

INMA, 24

Vice: Wow, check out those tights. What are you studying, Leopard Lady?

Inma:

I finished my BA in fashion at the Institute of European Design last year, and I'm currently doing a masters in illustration and graphic design.

That’s a strong set of qualifications right there if you want to get into the “creative” world. Do you tend to pick your clothes with similarly creative intent?

A lot of my clothes are secondhand and stolen from my grandparents and aging aunts. Pretty much everything I wear is vintage but things like these leggings I buy from the high street.
