LONDON - SYMPATHY STRIKE

A couple of weekends ago, the Emos of London (specifically those into My Chemical Romance) joined in protest with their Mexican brethren to present a united front against their treatment in the press and (we presume) Emo intolerance worldwide. Jamie Taete attended the protest and sent us this report: "The reason the MCR fans were protesting was an article the Daily Mail published TWO YEARS AGO…"

"Their main problem was that it referred to the band and their fans as 'a suicide cult'. If you read it though, the whole article is full of ridiculous stuff. Like the part where they say 'the "black parade" is a place where all emos believe they will go when they die.' Or when they say that the main band emo kids listen to is Blink 182. Or the part where they have a quote from the coroner in some girl's suicide case "She had become an aficionado of the emo fad and she was a user of the internet, which enabled her to contact other emos all over the world, in particular America.' "

"I read a lot about the protest online before I went. The fans seemed to be divided into two camps: those who thought it would be best to dress preppy and be all polite (to prove the paper wrong) and the others who thought it would be better to dress as emo caricatures and self-harm on the steps of the Daily Mail. The message boards predicted thousands of people would turn up. In reality, about 150 showed."

"The protest got divided into two groups—one across the street from the Daily Mail offices and one about a mile away at marble arch (the organisers didn't want to get into any trouble). Scarily, most of the people that showed up were waaaaay over the age that I though the average MCR fan would be (13). The only interesting thing that happened during the whole TWELVE HOURS of 'protesting' was when Anonymous turned up to counter protest with signs that said something about celebrity worship being bullshit. (They're those guys that wear V for Vendetta masks and protest the easiest, least scary targets imaginable. Like when they protested against the evils of religion by storming the Church of Scientology)"
