A shooting at a church in Texas has left multiple people dead, according to multiple reports. The official death toll has not been confirmed.
A man entered First Baptist Church in South Sutherland, a small town around 35 miles from San Antonio, and shot multiple people around 11:30 AM, according to police. The man is now dead, according to KSAT 12.
ABC News is reporting that the shooter was a white male in his twenties and that at least 27 people died in the shooting, a number also reported by CNN.
Wilson County commissioner Albert Gamez Jr. told CNN that an emergency medical technician told him 27 people were dead and 24 others were injured.
A reporter for KSAT 12 on the scene posted a video of families sitting outside the church waiting to hear about loved ones.
One of the deceased is the 14-year-old daughter of the church’s pastor, Frank Pomeroy, according a CNN interview given by his wife, Sherry Pomeroy. She added that neither of them were at the church during the shooting.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a tweet, “Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act.”
President Donald Trump said he was monitoring the situation from Japan, his first stop in a five-country trip through Asia.
Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz also condemned the attack, with Cruz calling it “truly evil.”
In a statement about the shooting to ABC News, Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) said, “The terrifying fact is that no one is safe so long as Congress chooses to do absolutely nothing in the face of this epidemic.”
