LONDON - DARWIN: THE ELECTRO MUSICAL

Darwin is the new black. Or something.

There was that massive exhibit at the Natural History Museum last month. There was a fictionalized Charles Darwin in that fantastical, fanciful kid's film that turned out to be a total Debbie-downer, The Fall. And now The Knife are writing a Darwin opera. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Ken Ham, founder and curator of the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky.

Danish performance artists Hotel Pro Forma have commissioned the Swedish group to write the opera, titled 'Tomorrow in a Year',a creative choice which they state as "experimental and exploratory. The music is written for three singers who come from different backgrounds: electronica pop, classical opera and performance. They are the protagonists of the performance, displaying three ways of experiencing the world". Citing Darwin's perception of time, transformation and the non-linear potentialities of evolution as the inspiration for the work, HPF plans to showcase the opera on the 150th birthday of the publication of On the Origin of Species. Is this the most European thing ever?
