We Saw This: Austra

I found myself smiling wildly, doing various dances with my knees, neck, and shoulders, and just generally having the time of my life while they performed.

I'll go on record for the one-millionth time saying that Austra is one of the only bands, if not THE only band, that I will leave the house for, everytime.

Some people have still never heard of Austra, and this makes me physically ill. It also makes me wish that I were their publicist, so that I could have reasons to talk to them on the phone all day, drive them to interviews, and ask for their advice in picking out Edible Arrangements baskets for all of the lovely Music Editors who have written about them, and given them publicity for the past handful of years. Aside from the fact that some people have yet to be shown their beautiful ways, a shit ton of people have, because the show last night was sold out.

Zambri and Doldrums opened last night, and they were both very good. I don't know if it was because I was already a little bit drunk, or what, but usually opening bands are a painful experience for me, and feel like they take a million years to be over, but I very much enjoyed both of these bands. Especially Zambri because one of the girls (Zambri is a band of two girls) kept adding more and more microphones until, at the end of their set, she was singing with this big clump of them. I laughed.

When Doldrums ended their set, my friend Sasha Hecht (Girl Reporter) and I ran downstairs and elbowed people in the ribs until we could get as close to the stage as possible. My main goal in life is to have Katie Stelmanis, the lead singer for Austra, realize that we're in love with one another, so I was happy to be front and center to really up my chances for some serious eye contact and face time. When she came out I spilled my drink on myself a little, inexplicable shouted, "she's wearing a watermelon dress!!" And then didn't look away from her face for the rest of the show. Here's a picture of her clearly singing right to me:

I found myself smiling wildly, doing various dances with my knees, neck, and shoulders, and just generally having the time of my life while they performed. I didn't get annoyed by anyone once, and I wished, and even said out loud, that if I had things my way, they would perform forever, on just a never-ending loop, forever.

After the show, I ended up puking truffle fries in the middle of the street. So there's that.
