Shopping carts packed to the brim with freshly skinned goat hooves? Yummy. The clash of golf ball-sized, hailstones hitting our car? Holy windshield! We were in Soweto, Johannesburg's biggest township, on a mission to find taxi drivers who push tracks from South Africa’s burgeoning recording artists to their passengers’ ears. Riding a taxi here is a totally different experience of public transportation - commuting here is a more like a party than a chore.

While exploring the streets in our MINI Coupé we learned that South Africa has a music scene that evolves as fast as its young fans. Kwaito was the sound on the streets after apartheid ended, but South Africa's newer, more globalized generation has turned to House as their music of choice. All the while taxis have been blasting the beats to Soweto Township and beyond.

To understand this scene fully, we get out of the MINI and into the taxis, listening to the bass-lines reverberating from custom speaker installations. The search for how Kombis (Taxis) promote music means getting deep into the Soweto music scene and partying with the locals. Stay tuned for our full episode on December 5.
