That's So Ravin': Secret Spots & Aging Ravers

Advice on where to shake that thang in the Big Apple, and an answer to the timeless question—do ravers have an expiration date?

Every music genre has its seedy underbelly, a world of unspoken tricks of the trade and a code that helps keep things alive (no matter how dirty and scandalous it may appear from the outside). Our That's So Ravin' columnists have been down… and around. Worldwide party purveyors and dancefloor makers offer up some party tips for ya, free of charge.

Dear Ravin,
I keep hearing everyone talking about getting old. How do I know when I've crossed the line from aspiring DJ to creepy old guy?
Tom, Boston.

Dear Tom,
Growing old and partying—a topic that never seems to run out of steam. The thing is that there are plenty of relevant producers, DJs, managers, agents and promoters out there that are silver-foxin' it. Who gives a shit? If you love music and DJing is your passion, then keep on keepin' on. However… If you are still an "aspiring" DJ, do make time for self-reflection. If it seems your life's goal of becoming a famous DJ isn't materializing in the near future, maybe move it into the hobby category and don't quit your day job.

Dear Ravin,
I just moved to NYC. Got recommendations for the best parties and clubs to go to? I don't want to head out blindly and end up somewhere that is a douche magnet.
S.S., NYC.

Dear S.S.,
Welcome to New York! As a general rule of thumb, I would say to steer clear of as many arbitrary door-policy venues as possible, and spots that base their core business on bottle service. That tends to invite bridge-n-tunnel dweebos looking to blow their load on overpriced vodka for girls in bandau dresses. This city is full of great open-air parties in the summer, new clubs and venues poppin' up all the time, and promoters that host some of the best local and global talent every week! Dig in, and don't forget to tip.

Oh, and bring your own GPS. Taxi drivers in late-night Brooklyn have no f***ing idea where they're going.
