Holloh Swaps Murky Bass for Beautiful 90s House Kitsch in “What Did You Think”

It's hard to believe Holloh's latest track, "What Did You Think," is by the same act that put out their self-titled EP almost exactly a year ago. While the EP is darkly electronic, pulling elements like wobbly bass and drum breaks straight from the drum and bass playbook, "What Did You Think" stands out as a bright and bubbly tune.

Out September 29 on Toronto's Downpour Records, the group's penchant for murky synths comes face-to-face with blissful tropes straight from early-90s bubblegum house. From the evocative James Brown-esque "yeah" riding in with the drums at the start of the song, to the ebullience of the piano lines, listeners are permitted to dance, smile, or reflect on the days of Marky Mark.

"Our goal with Holloh has always been to rediscover the emotional backbone of house music and reclaim the soul of a movement that's rapidly losing its human element," the duo says. "'What Did You Think' is a loaded question, so the thing you should be asking yourself is What Did You Feel?"
