Crate Expectations: Pan-Pot

The duo behind Second State imprints teaches us a little German.
Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Pan-Pot.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Thomas: "Take On Me" by A-Ha. When I was young my father bought a RFT radio and I was so excited when he plugged it in and turned it on. The first song that came on was by A-Ha.

Tassilo: David Hasselhoff's "Looking for Freedom." It's a childhood song memory, I don't know why but it just happened. I still love to sing the hook line.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
Tassilo: "Coatnoise (Dave Clarke Remix)" by General Midfield and Johannes Heil's "Paranoid Dancer (DJ Hell Remix)." Back in the day I had shitty re-loop turntables and practiced a lot on them. This must have been one of the first tracks I mixed. Actually, I started mixing hip-hop when I was around 14 but with CDs, but that doesn't count here.

Thomas: Jake Fairley's "Exploder/Sender Records" and "Low Blow" by Steve Bug & Richie Hawtin. Same here, I had really bad turntables… "riemengetrieben" or "lace-driven" as we say in German and only about 10 records. I bought them in our old DNS record store and mixed them in all possible ways!

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
Thomas: Avicii's "Brother." Oktoberfest!!!! Yeehaw! So guilty!

Tassilo: Rihanna's "Diamonds."

I mean come on… the lyrics "Shine bright like a diamond" always reminds me of myself.

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
Tassilo: "I Sat By The Ocean" by Queens of the Stoneage. I love the Queens. More generally, I'm in love with guitar music.

Thomas: José Gonzalez's "Far Away." It reminds me of when I was playing Red Dead Redemption and I crossed the border to Mexico and that song came on. Pure goose bumps!

Which track of your own do you love the most?
Tassilo: One which is on repeat in our studio but not out yet.
Thomas: Sorry, we can't talk about it much more!

What track of your own do you hate the most?
Tassilo: I can't hear "Captain My Captain" anymore.
Thomas: Same, same!

What track are you most excited to drop in a set?
Tassilo: Hinz & Ruhmhardt's "Doch." To us, this is the track of the year.

Thomas: Yes I 100% agree.

What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set?
Thomas:  "Chambacu" by Aurita Castillo. If it's not that one then it is Nirvana's "Lake of Fire."

Tassilo: Motörhead's "Ace of Spades." Best rock and roll song of all time.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
Tassilo: Moderat's "Bad Kingdom (Koze Remix)." Only thing I can say about this remix from Koze is "wow." Such a good production.

Thomas: "All Night" by Jon B. I love old drum and bass. Did I already tell you that? I LOVE them.

Pan-Pot will be curating the 17th installment of the Watergate CD series. The compilation is set to be released on October 13th.
