A Shadow Of Blue Mixes Stop-Motion With CGI, Fantasy With Reality

Carlos Lascano’s latest short film could charm a snake.

Carlos Lascano is a bit of a big deal when it comes to animation. One of his previous videos A Short Story in Stop Motion became an instant viral hit, and he was part of the judging panel in the animation category at the inaugural Vimeo Awards back in 2010. His animations are shot with a cinematic verve, imbued with an emotional resonance and universality, while balancing expert technique with an engaging, charming story.

His latest animation, A Shadow of Blue, uses stop-motion and computer imagery to deliver the stunning tale of a little girl creating her own fantasy world amongst the shadows because the real world isn’t quite living up to her expectations. It’s an ode to the imagination and also to silhouette animation, a technique used in the oldest surviving feature animation, The Adventures of Prince Achmed by Lotte Reiniger from 1926.

From his Vimeo page:

A touching story in which fantasy and reality merge to make dreams come true. How determining can reality be, and how can fantasy unleash an unexpected freedom? Can a fragile world of lights and shadows show us more than a silhouette drawn against the sunlight? A mixed-technique animated short film.
