Father and Son Film Space From a Homemade Weather Balloon

Don’t you wish your dad was this cool?

Homemade Spacecraft

On August 10th, Luke Geissbuhler and his young son launched their homemade device into the atmosphere. Composed of nothing but a weather balloon, an insulated capsule housing a camera, an iPhone for tracking, and handwarmers to keep the camera from freezing — the craft climbed 100,000 feet (that’s 19 miles high). Here’s the story of how they did it, as well as the amazing footage the camera captured as it left the stratosphere for the blackness of space.
