But the 20 year old portable’s usage as an instrument isn’t limited to the abilities of its chirping, rough-sounding microchip. Much in the vein of trashcan-banging street musicians, the above video explores the acoustic qualities of the device itself in a Steve Reich-style minimalist composition that uses everything from springy battery contacts to the feedback noise that occurs when an adapter plug approaches the AC power jack. Now, if the author thinks they can pull this off live, he/she should definitely contact me for NYC booking.
