Jeff Scher’s bio describes him as “a painter who makes experimental films and an experimental filmmaker who paints.” He continues to meld these two practices in his latest short film, Nocturn, an animation painted onto a lampshade. Between exposures Scher rotated the lampshade, and the finished film creates the impression of an ceaselessly scrolling abstract painting. Set to a wonderful minimalist composition for strings, flute, and piano by Shay Lynch, Nocturn is quickly hypnotic. As the film progresses, the spinning lampshade is completely covered with countless layers of paint, becoming something akin to an ever-evolving zoetrope. Watch the film below.
