Protesters surrounded Sacramento Kings arena after police shot and killed unarmed black man

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Hundreds of protesters hit the streets of Sacramento, California, on Thursday to call for action after police shot and killed 22-year-old Stephon Clark in his own backyard on Sunday.

Initially, police thought Clark had a gun. Then, the department said he had a "toolbar." But he was only carrying a cell phone, according to the police's final statement.

Among the protesters was Clark’s brother, Stevante.

“I can’t even go to my grandma’s house because I feel my brother there … If you ain’t safe at grandma’s house, where the fuck you safe at?” Stephon also lived at the house.

Hundreds of protesters formed a human chain around the Golden 1 Center before the Sacramento Kings game on Thursday. The area closed its doors before most fans could get in because police couldn’t ensure fans would be able to safely get through the crowd.

After the game, Kings owner Vivek Randivé spoke to the audience.

"We recognize that it’s not just business as usual, and we’re going to work really hard to prevent this kind of a tragedy from happening again," he said.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, and district and city attorneys are now investigating the shooting.
