A lot of crazy shit can happen at a fast food drive-thru window.
Well, we can now add the threat of hacking to that list. According to local news network WCTI12, the drive-thru intercom system at a McDonald's in New Bern, North Carolina was recently "hacked" by an unknown party.
One customer pulled up to the window and filmed his interaction with the invasive voice, which informs the driver of the car, "You know, I'm actually on the toilet right now and I'm just going to serve you your food. I'm not even going to wash my hands. I'm trying to get some special sauce out right now."
The voice goes on to warn, "You know what? Just pull forward, because I'm going to give you whatever the fuck I feel like giving you." The warning is then followed by the sounds of a woman moaning heavily.
The YouTube user who uploaded the video, titled "Crazy Kid Hacks McDonald's Drive Thru in New Bern," said in the description of the clip that they had no idea what was happening. "So this happened today at the McDonald's in New Bern North Carolina. Apparently someone hacked the headset of the poor girl working the window of McDonald's. I couldn't believe what I was hearing!" They also claim that the video is indeed real and that "this is not the first time that this has happened."
And while this has all the elements of a juvenile prank, the apparent hack was sufficient to warrant a criminal investigation by police, who are working with the McDonald's in question to figure out what the hell happened.
"We are investigating this matter with the help of the New Bern Police Department," McDonald's franchise owner Bill Purcell said in a statement. "In addition, we are taking steps to prevent this isolated incident from happening again. As local owners, our biggest priority is our customers and community and we want to ensure that every experience at our restaurant is a positive one."
So, next time you're at a drive-thru window, just remember that you're not really any safer than you are inside the restaurant… and now you know one more thing to look out for. On the bright side, at least it's not a flying alligator.
