Divers (Short Animation) from Paris Mavroidis on Vimeo. As the virtual world continues to take over the real world, artists like Paris Mavroidis, are experimenting with the boundless nature of digital mediums. Mavroidis saw the medium’s limitless possibilities as an interesting opportunity to create a 3D animation depicting a dive through the clouds.Divers is a virtual journey that begins with a single jump off a diving board conveniently placed in the middle of the sky, and transforms into a beautifully choreographed free-falling experience. A single diver turns into countless others that all come together and move in a singular fashion to an effect that’s simply breathtaking. The idea for the project arose from Mavroidis’ desire to explore the visual aesthetic that comes from large scale choreography where “participants lose their visual identity as they become part of a larger entity, which in turn takes on a life and movement of its own.”To get the movements just right, Mavroidis spent time looking through footage and photographs of skaters, gymnasts, swimmers, and just about every other synchronized sport you can think of. Yet, his stylistic choices resemble American and European cinema during the 1920s and 30s, forming a nice juxtaposition between the work of old-school masters, such as Busby Berkeley, and the futuristic element of digital animation. In this way, the 3D animation resembles a bit of everything from avant-garde cinema to seapunk imagery. For more on the Brooklyn-based artist, check out his Vimeo page and official website.[via Nylon.]
