An Innovative Video Game About Lawn Mowing? Play It At Experience Intel This Weekend!

Hide&Seek have created a video game that merges two playing modes in one.

One of the Ultrabook's coolest functionalities is that it can turn from a laptop into a tablet just by flipping back the keyboard. In a project designed especially for the device, gaming design studio Hide&Seek, in collaboration with Kill Screen, have created a video game called Terra that celebrates this convertable feature and uses it to compose a game with two unique playing modes.

In an innovative mix of gaming platforms and styles, Hide&Seek combine the touchscreen functionality of tablets with the keyboard-driven interactivity of PC gaming, giving players the best of both worlds. For the tablet mode of the game, the Ultrabook's touchscreen allows you to terraform a mountain range. Once you've created your terrain, you flip out the keyboard and your perspective flips, too—suddenly you're on the mountainside mowing the grass that's sprung up, scoring points for the type and length of grass you cut. But work quickly, because time is of the essence.

Hide&Seek's ethos is all about inventing new forms of play, and in this project they were confronted with a device that specifically called for a new mode of interaction and gameplay design.

"We love the idea of trying to build a game around a specific piece of hardware," says Hide&Seek's Development Director, Mark Heggen. We love the ways that a new piece of tech can open up doors to new ways of gameplay. Time and time again it's obvious to me that constraints just give better results. Left to our own devices, there's a certain type of game that we would make, but when you get thrown these curveballs, like a laptop that turns into a tablet, those kinds of curveballs push you in a direction that you wouldn't go in normally."
