Arbréole Turns A Forest Into An Interactive Dance Party

Imagine a string of colorful lanterns that play music and light up according to your movements or dance moves—an arrangement that turns a cluster of trees into an interactive environment where every pantomime causes a different reaction. Enter Arbréole, a modern, social interpretation of a string of lights imagined by French artists Laetitia Favard and Alexi Prasit and developed in collaboration with CRIIF (Centre de Robotique Intégrée d-Île-de-France), Strate College, Le Cube, and composer Robin Aziomanoff.

Realized in June and exhibited at the Futur En Seine festival earlier this year, Arbréole explores the different ways people can interact in space, transforming users’ subtle gestures into tangible, visual situations.

Each lantern is autonomous, equipped with sensors that pick up on its surroundings. Depending on the pace and frequency in which you move, AI within the lanterns generates different types of music, color, and animations. The network of lanterns communicate wirelessly and are controlled by an Android phone.
