James Lavelle's 6 Music Mix

Clear out a couple hours for this—it’s worth it.

Upcoming Creator James Lavelle has had a long and illustrious career in music, as an artist, DJ, and record label owner. Dropping his hip-hop influenced beats at block parties at a boyish 15 years old, and starting his own record label, Mo’ Wax, at the tender age of 18, here is a man who is practically a sibling to dance music, maturing as it did. His record label’s released many albums from many artists including DJ Shadow’s seminal sample-sourced Endtroducing…, an album that sits in everyone’s collection, and that’s earned a place in the Guinness World Records.

Anyone who’s seen or heard one of his live albums knows he plays sets stuffed with intelligent electronica. He’s a man who has collaborated with numerous celebrated musical innovators under his collaborative moniker UNKLE—from Massive Attack’s 3D to Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme. He’s a man who is a part of dance music’s very structure. Take him away and the rest crumbles.

He recently played a mix for BBC radio station 6 Music, playing music he was influenced by, music that enlightened his styles and mind. As well as tracks from his latest sonic excursion under UNKLE, the album Where Did the Night Fall, released earlier this month. And following that is a club mix to get that body moving. So you have the best of all worlds. You’d do well to listen up. And quickly, because it’s only streaming until 23 May.
