As if news of Gil Scott-Heron’s long-awaited 13th studio album, I’m New Here, released this past February wasn’t good enough, we’ve just heard word of a remix album, We’re New Here, due out in February 2011 produced by Jamie Smith of The xx (who’s audio/visual installation you might remember from our Creators Project NYC Launch event). Although we can’t hear the album in full until springtime, the duo released the song and video for “NY Is Killing Me” to quench our thirst for good remixes.I’m New Here departs from the jazz-funk infused sound Scott-Heron is known for, embracing ambient, electronic, and dubstep influences instead. We’re anticipating additional sound transfusions after hearing this teaser track, as Smith throws Scott-Heron’s broken vocals on top of a dirty bass among minimalist halfstep patterns. The general mood is suspenseful, but a marimba at the end gives a subdued tone. Click here to download the track or pre-order the album.
