Music

Not Your Grandma's Symphonies

Two YouTube orchestras.

In 2008, our creator Marcelo Camelo released a project of a multimedia orchestra called Orquestra Youtube. The idea was to work on his own compositions, using multimedia material on the Internet to create sounds. As we expected, the result is very experimental:

In the same year, YouTube opened a path to orchestra musicians all over the world who would like to play together. The prerequisites were to record a video playing the piece “The Internet Symphony,” an original composition by Tan Dun for the project, as well as another classical piece of choice. The group presented at Carnegie Hall, and it was such a striking success that there’s going to be a new edition. This time around, the original piece was composed by Mason Bates, a maestro from Chicago who mixes traditional composition with electronic rhythms and narrative forms. You can enter to be a part of the concert in 2011 on the official webpage. The website also provides video classes for each instrument.
