Herbie Hancock - "Rockit"

This video was designed to shock you. Just take a look at all the spazzed-out animatronics and you'll be left wondering how something so weird made it onto television in 1984. You can thank MTV for that—this video was wildly popular and won five video music awards in the year it was released. The clip singlehandedly launched the track to hit status, bringing the sounds of scratching to a mainstream audience for the first time. Notably, the artist himself hardly appears, a conscious decision in response to MTV's initial reluctance towards featuring black artists.
