John McEnroe Calls Latest Nick Kyrgios Outburst "Black Eye" For Tennis

"It's just a black eye for the sport and it's a black eye for him," Johnny Mac says.

Sitting in the Eurosport commentary box at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne last night, John McEnroe looked down on centre court, watched Nick Kyrgios' latest outburst and shook his head.

Losing his early Australian Open clash against Andreas Seppi, the 21-year-old Aussie gave an in-game performance that ranged from disinterested and lethargic, to petulant and childish.

At one point, Kyrgios - who went down 1-6, 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2, 10-8 to Seppi - smashed his racket on the ground to the shock of fans. McEnroe - a famously explosive seven-time Grand Slam winner who has criticized Kyrgios before - had had enough.

"Even I'm at a loss for words," McEnroe said. "Overall I would call it a damn shame because I think he's the most talented guy in the world [at] 21 and under - maybe even at 29 and under.

"He could be the best player in the world, but mentally he's No. 200 in the world, and I think at critical moments it showed."

"It's OK to show your emotions, and I'd like to see that in a one-on-one game when you're out there by yourself," he added. "But when he goes through those periods when he's not competing, that it's just a black eye for the sport and it's a black eye for him."

In his post-match press conference, Kyrgios - who has been struggling with a knee injury over the last month - showed his displeasure for the 57-year-old former world number one.

"Johnny Mac will know, mate," he answered to several, unrelated questions. "Just talk to him. He knows everything."
