With the price of coke collapsing (a gram costs as little as 30 Euros) and hordes of Italian kids imitating their VIP-club-venerating, football-playing, Original-Guido heroes in Saturday afternoon nightclubs, the mayor of Milan is worried that the next generation are turning into drug monsters. And so he decreed that free drug test kits be handed out to 4,000 Milanese families. The tests look for traces of marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, and opiates…But the move has been widely criticised. The head of the University of Milan's forensic toxicology department, Professor Lodi disagrees with this strategy. He says they want "to use parents instead of cops," and that the test is just going to start a witchhunt. Apparently it's also not that accurate, as it doesn't take into account ketamine or ecstasy, (probably the two most popular drugs in that age group) and it reacts to codeine-based cough syrup in the same way as it does to heroin.
